Balamb Garden original photo

We were young, we were crazy, and we had no idea of what we wanted, but this is what happens with every band at the beginning, or not? This edited photo was born in 2009, the same year that we decided to work together. Alfonso (right) and Magnus (left), who is writing this now, nowadays form the core of group, while Pilar (medium) left us, but we are still friends with her... We still feed her in the basement where we keep her locked :D

Some questions to... Erika Lloyd from "Little Grey Girlfriend", by Magnus Dagon

(link to the interview in spanish)

Since I started listening to non-mainstream music (the kind of music that nowadays you won't find in MTV commercials), Little Grey Girlfriend (New York City, USA) has been my favourite band without a doubt. Their style is unique but not too strange or difficult to assimilate: they are close and misterious at the same time. And of course, I loved that ability to show atmospheric tracks in a touching manner.

If you want to know them better, this is their webpage: http://littlegreygirlfriend.com. Also, I'd like to give two personal recommendations: their song 'Time pops bubbles':

http://littlegreygirlfriend.bandcamp.com/track/time-pops-bubbles-2

And the videoclip of their beautiful song 'Fulfill':

That said, let's start the interview!

- First of all, why "Little Grey Girlfriend"?

"Little Grey Girlfriend" was started when my husband Brad (our keyboardist and co-songwriter) was working as a pianist on a cruise ship. We had been dating for a short time and had to be apart for 5 months because of this job. He spent so much time talking with me over the phone that he called his small grey cell phone his, "Little Grey Girlfriend".

- Your music could be the soundtrack of...

A Sci-Fi Romance.

- As a comic-style writer I was surprised when I found that you had a comic in your web. Do you like comics?

I draw a lot, and decided to give a short comic a go. I don't actually read comics often, but love looking at the graphics and have tremendous admiration for the artists.

- You would like to play with...

I would like to sing and play with Mike Patton.

- What is the album that you would like to listen when in a quiet walk at night? (for example, in my case it's "Angel Milk" by Telépopmusik)

Joanna Newsom, "Have One on Me".

- And the album that you like a lot but you consider underrated? (in my case it's "A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular" of Hooverphonic, if you like to know)

I love "Stereophonic Sound Spectacular"!!! A couple of artists I thought were highly underrated in the U.S. are Kate Bush and the Cocteau Twins. I know they were both more popular in Europe, but barely got any radio play here, especially Kate's early work. I love all of their albums and am lately obsessed with Kate's first album "The Kick Inside", and Cocteau Twins' "Heaven Or Las Vegas".

- What is the most peculiar thing that has inspired you a song?

The lyrics for "Time Pops Bubbles" were inspired by shapes I was creating with bubbles on the side of my bathtub.

- And your favourite/most personal song?

"Nothing" off of our EP Green-Wood. The disparities in wealth and human health in NYC are insane. It is more obvious here, than anywhere else I've lived in this country. It breaks my heart everyday and I am ashamed with myself for not doing more to help.

(I'm not sure if you were asking for my favorite song by another person.) My most favorite piece by another composer is "Clair de lune" by Debussy. I can listen to it at any point in my life and it feels so powerful and relevant. It makes my eyes water every time.

- One last question, have you ever been to Spain? Would you like to play there?

I have been to Spain, but it has been a long time. When I was little I lived in Germany and we traveled to Spain a few times. I remember beautiful orange trees everywhere. My sister-in-law is from Madrid, so hopefully we will make it over there when they are traveling home to visit her family within the next couple of years. I would of course love to play in Spain! It would have to be part of a tour, maybe one day...

- Well, one question more. Plans for the future?

I have been writing a lot of new music and we have enough material for a new full album. We will start recording this coming summer and I will try to remember to post updates along the way. Brad has recorded and is releasing his first jazz trio album, Brad Whiteley Trio: Pathless Land, this coming January. (I just finished the album artwork.)

- Thanks a lot for the interview.

I hope you are having a beautiful fall in Spain!

Unas preguntas a...

http://littlegreygirlfriend.bandcamp.com/track/time-pops-bubbles-2

Joanna Newsom, 'Have One on Me'.

¡¡¡Adoro 'Stereophonic Sound Spectacular'!!!
